Shootings at three Atlanta-area spas on Tuesday left eight people dead, including six Asian women, spurring concern among advocates and police that the killings could be the latest in a surge of hate crimes against Asian Americans.

Police arrested Robert Aaron Long, 21, after a brief manhunt and said he is the suspect in all three shootings.

Sheriff: No indication of racial motivation in deadly spa shootings; suspect had been there before

ATLANTA — The Cherokee County Sheriff has exclusively told Channel 2 Action News that the suspect in the deadly rampage at three metro Atlanta spas did not indicate that the shootings were racially motivated.

Channel 2's Chris Jose learned that the suspect, Robert Aaron Long, 21, of Woodstock, allegedly targeted businesses that he had been to before.

Long was captured in Crisp County, Georgia around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators interviewed him shortly after and say Long did not give indications that this was a hate crime. They are not ruling out that possibility completely, but say initial indications don’t point that direction.

“He does claim that it was not racially motivated,” Capt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said. “He apparently has an issue, what he considers a sex addiction.” Mr. Baker added that he saw the spas as “a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate.” The authorities said the gunman had told them he was driving to Florida when he was caught, and Mr. Baker said he may have been trying to commit similar violence at a business connected to the “porn industry” there.

Message my butt, these women were there for the unsaid business that would justify two facilities in a single block. They were probably illegal and being exploited by asian bosses who employed them under the table. That does nothing to justify their being murdered by a religious zealot. Sure, they're nefarious... but they sort of just do their thing and don't bother anyone. I doubt he walked into one and got bad service, so it strikes me as odd he'd target the massage parlors. Maybe if he just got a massage, he'd feel better about them.
