I'm looking for the most family friendly neighborhoods (North - like Sandy Springs down to Maybe Brookhaven) with good public schools, on the Marta Line. I've heard mixed reviews about Roswell schools and Sandy Springs seems like mostly condos. Brookhaven seems nice but maybe some not-so nice areas?

Any help would be great.

MD

Please read the Moving to Atlanta post (the first one) and provide us with the information requested. Also, will you be able to drive to a MARTA station?

Sandy Springs would definitely fit most of your criteria but I can't really comment on the schools because I don't have any kids in school. As far as Sandy Springs being mostly condos, that's definitely not the case. There are a few areas in Sandy Springs that have a concentration of condos, like along Roswell Rd for example. However the vast majority of Sandy Springs is made up of single family homes in pretty well established neighborhoods.

You can check this guide book out also, it may help answer some of your questions (they also have a printed version that you can pick up around town or you can probably call the chamber to have one sent to you):

Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber of Commerce - Sandy Springs Guidebook

I think your best bet on a community that is 5-10 minutes from the MARTA line would be the area served by the Austin Elem/Peachtree Middle/Dunwoody High cluster in Dunwoody.

That's good to hear there are single family homes in Sandy Aprings, but I'm having a hard time finding some in my rent range of 1,250 max it seems

Considering your criteria, I recommend that you rent a home or apartment in the following areas:

1. Ashford Park ES/Chamblee MS/Chamblee HS
*in Brookhaven/Chamblee/North Atlanta Area
*Brookhaven MARTA Station and Chamblee MARTA Station

2. Huntley Hills ES/Chamblee MS/Chamblee HS
*in Chamblee
*Chamblee MARTA Station

3. Montgomery ES/Chamblee MS/Chamblee HS
*in North Atlanta/Ashford-Dunwoody Area
*Brookhaven MARTA Station and Chamblee MARTA Station

4. Austin ES/Peachtree MS/Dunwoody HS
*in Dunwoody
*Dunwoody MARTA Station, Sandy Springs MARTA Station, and North Springs MARTA Station

5. Chestnut ES/Peachtree MS/Dunwoody HS
*in Dunwoody
*Dunwoody MARTA Station

6. Woodland ES/Sandy Springs MS or Ridgeview MS/North Springs HS or Riverwood HS
*in Sandy Springs
*North Springs MARTA Station and Sandy Springs MARTA Station

7. Spalding Drive ES/Ridgeview MS or Sandy Springs MS/Riverwood HS or North Springs HS
*in Sandy Springs
*Sandy Springs MARTA Station and North Springs MARTA Station

I hope this helps. If you also want to consider renting in Midtown and Buckhead along the northside MARTA lines, I/we can give you more options that meet your criteria. If you further decide to consider the East line on MARTA, your options will expand even more.

Good Luck!

Hi - I am moving from Seattle to Atlanta later this year with my family. I will be working in Buckhead and looking for advice on best schools/areas.
1. Budget -up to $900K
2. House/Condo/Townhome? House
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home) Commute to Buckhead
4. Children(public school vs. private). 1 (soon to be 2) school aged kids. I would prefer public, but open to private.
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two. Probably a mix, but more suburban.
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not? Not important
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood. No preference.

Thanks in advance for your help!
