The foundation for Atlanta's explosive growth was laid years if not decades ahead of landing the 1996 olympics...

It's not a matter of accepting a casino, Augusta would do that in a heartbeat if they were smart... it's a matter of someone wanting to actually build a casino in Augusta when you're up against a juggernaut in Atlanta and a city like Savannah that has much more of a draw than Augusta.

Regardless, not getting a casino doesn't doom a city from making the next jump... this is evident all across the USA, as very few have casinos.

If Savannah gets a casino, does that put them in a position to make the jump before Augusta? Does Augusta start to lose dollars to Savannah? Does Augusta start to lose people to Savannah? I could go on but I think ya'll get my point.

Casinos would be an huge boom to either city, but the majority of successful cities don't have one.. Nobody can predict the future growth of Augusta when the impact generated by 2018 is greater than the current GDP...

Let's just deal in the straight facts...

The $1 billion NSA at Fort Gordon open earlier this year, and the building is currently expanding at the moment... The massive $14 billion Plant Vogtle, $5 billion MOX facility, $1 billion Bridgestone expansion, $172 million Starbucks plant, $115 million Rockwood plant, are all under construction.....

Then you have the multiple projects coming from the GHSU/ASU consolidation... I think having Cal Ripken and Jim Jacoby wanting to develop the GGHF property says were Augusta is heading..

I think the current mayor is very progressive and will probably just miss out on his full vision when the term expires in 2014... The Chronicle happen to mention the MOX facility today...

Despite challenges, MOX plant remains on schedule | The Augusta Chronicle

Back on topic........ The Augusta/North Augusta master plan actually calls for demolishing the elevated parts of Calhoun Expressway.... In order to create additional development in/around the Harrisburg area...

Personally I like the idea of converting the expressway into a street level boulevard with a raised median sort of like Wheeler Rd by the exchange. That would create access to the canal and offer prime canal side land for any additional medical district expansion of research parks.

I dunno. Calhoun is convenient and it offers nice panoramic views of the area. If Augusta were to build up, Calhoun would be my choice for entering downtown.
