Major growth taking place in the inner city(Harrisburg)... This weekend, the Salvation Army's Augusta Kroc Center will hold a series of private and public events leading up to the official grand opening Aug. 6-7.

The $100 million arts, worship and multipurpose center is part of the legacy of McDonald's heiress Joan Kroc, whose $1.7 billion gift to the Salvation Army is being used to plan, construct and permanently support community centers in many cities, including Augusta. Sprawled across a 17-acre campus between Broad Street and the Augusta Canal, the 100,000-square-foot complex includes an aquatics center, performing arts and worship hall, banquet facilities and a long list of other amenities.

A system of ditches just south of downtown Augusta will soon look a whole lot more like a canal. Work to rewater the third level of the Augusta Canal will be finished in a couple of months, said canal authority Executive Director Dayton Sherrouse. The $396,000 project includes building a mechanical dam to replace a set of old canal gates near 12th and Telfair streets.

The recently built Augusta-Richmond County Judicial Center sits next to the canal's third level. The canal authority plans to extend its bicycle path in 2012 along newly rewatered parts of the canal using a Department of Transportation grant.

CCHS has raised nearly $2 million dollars, but another half million is needed for the second story renovation. The second floor will eventually house a pediatric physical therapy suite, counseling office and classroom.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $3.1 million, which includes $2.5 million for the renovation of both floors, $300,000 for medical equipment and a $300,000 endowment.

See the 1982 Grammy award of legendary Augusta icon James Brown along with hundreds of new artifacts directly from the late-musical entertainer’s estate. The expansion of the James Brown exhibit at the Augusta Museum of History opened to the public today. “There is no other place in America that has an exhibit like this one except right here in Augusta, Georgia,” Glaser said.

New urban market, possible VIP options for downtown goers

AUGUSTA,Ga. --Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver cut the ribbon on the first downtown urban market Tuesday. If fresh local fruits and vegetables sound good, you might also like the latest entertainment option being discussed at the James Brown Arena. It seems living, working and playing downtown may soon become more than just a cute saying. It's a big time for Mike Raeis. He and his partners cut the ribbon on Sundrees Market at 930 Broad St. "Augusta needs retail," Raeis said. "The first thing that the partners asked me is what does it need as far as retail? I said ... a grocery store. Everybody is asking for a grocery store."

Georgia Department of Transportation shifted the expected completion date from July 31 to Dec. 15, said Mike Keene, state DOT engineer for the Augusta area.

Completion of a project to improve lighting on Broad Street sidewalks and sunken parking wells is running nearly six months behind schedule.
Downtown lighting project behind schedule | The Augusta Chronicle

The final result is worth a few months of extra construction... The city is also installing 180-190 cameras from 13th-5 street.. I wondering what's taking the Saint Sebastian pkwy to finish construction.. The 15th street bridge is taking FOREVER to get finished... The city is suppose do some landscaping on Saint Sebastian to make it look similar to Wheeler rd in West Augusta..
