Hey everyone, Im moving to Austin in Oct and need recommendations for a place to stay. Im budgeting under 900 for Apt or Duplex or House with a garage on the South side of Austin (safe area). I know it may seem impossible but I think it can be done with very hard searching.

I have excellent credit and sold my house so Im pretty much mature and responsible. If you know anyone looking for a good tenant, please forward this post. Thanks a bunch.

Do you mean the south side of Austin in Austin, or south of Austin? Also, how many bedrooms? $900 should get you a 1-1 in South Austin.

Hi! Either or. South side or south of Austin is fine down to Buda. If 1 bedroom is what I can get, I wont complain! :-) Any referral is greatly appreciated.

Really a garage in safe area is what Im most concerned with along with price range. I took a beating on my house price so I have to maximize what I have and not what I want - Guess.. LOL!

THanks a bunch!

This apartment search website allowed me to search for your criteria, including garage, in zip code 78748, far south central Austin and produced 9 listings, and 7 listings in 78749 which has a lower crime rate.

Most of Austin is very low in violent crime, so it is safe. Theft is a bigger problem. For safe areas in South Austin I'd look anywhere but 78741 and the north half of 78744. Also avoid anything close to the railroad tracks that run thru the middle of 78704, 78745 and 78748.

There are some duplexes in 78704 with garages (some w/carports) that are in the 850-1000 range (for a 2Br). They tend to be older. Some are in a very nice section of Barton Hills, there are some by St. Eds, and some over by Manchaca just north of 290. There are a few that are pretty run down, though. Best thing to do might be to drive around there, and look for "for rent" signs -- often that's all the property owners will do, because that's all they need to (they will rent easily). You could also look for "leases" in 78704 on:
