Or did you just mean white countries like Russia?
Or Singapore, South Korea or Taiwan - obviously not "first world" either.

I think if there were more bars like this, where you could walk to, there would be less drunk driving.

The city should be more helpful with this. Maybe relaxed zoning?
There's not much architecture that's easy to walk to in Austin, or walkable neighborhoods relative to most older cities. That could be part of the problem.

I never said the city should create more bars.

I hadn't planned on switching gears to talk about the death penalty.
Just noticed the irony.

I should not have used the term "first world"--but while we're here, these are the countries that still have capital punishment. Great company we're in with this:

• Afghanistan
• Bahamas
• Bangladesh
• Belarus
• Botswana
• China
• Cuba
• Egypt
• Guatemala
• India
• Indonesia
• Iran
• Iraq
• Japan
• North Korea
• South Korea
• Lebanon
• Malaysia
• Pakistan
• Russia
• Saudi Arabia
• Singapore
• Somalia
• Sri Lanka
• Suriname
• Syria
• Taiwan
• Tajikistan
• Tonga
• United Arab Emirates
• United States
• Uzbekistan
• Vietnam
• Yemen

Now, back to the original topic. I have been to the handful of neighborhood bars that I referred to. What I observed was a very low-key and well-behaved group of adults enjoying adult refreshments in the company of other adults. The music is not loud. And the neighborhood seems to be okay with it. I know that the Draught House had some problems a few years ago, but they worked it out.

Nice strawmen there at the end, however.
One man's use is another man's abuse.

I agree about endangering others. Austin has a big problem. This is why I started the topic.

No, but there has been an effort to change this.

Cyclical argument. The problem isn't Austin, it's acceptance of DUI.

And for someone that didn't mean to talk about death penalty, why did you bring it up?

If you think operating a vehicle with a .11 BAC is "use", then we don't have much to talk about. The fact you can't make the distinction speaks volumes.

I have worked in two 'neighborhood' bars. I have been to many more. They are predominately populated by clinical alcoholics. I watched people dying of liver failure. I have watched multiple marriages/careers/families implode under the weight of the alcoholism. All that having more bars close to these people is maybe making them more easy to find in a drunken stupor. Make no mistake, the neighborhood bar survives solely on the backs of those spiraling down. Yes, there are a few non-alcoholics, but they spend so little in the bar that they are inconsequential.

We miss our "local" too, just a 4 years in the UK. I "see, smell and feel" the sounds.......down the footpath and we were there. No need for a car - although it was good that our row house had a blue door. Next life.
