Nothing between here and there and a big trek & expense to get there. Which is why I'll probably never see Uluru.
Going to the Red Centre is alot more than just Uluru. The Olgas and MacDonnell Ranges are King Canyon are just as spectacular if not as famous. It's about experiencing a whole landscape and the local culture.

Darwin and the ""Top End"" is somewhere everyone wants to go to once in their life-time.
As someone that has never been to the tropics, and only seen crocs at places like Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast, such a visit is mandatory to see such wild and dangerous creatures. as well as a modern city.
I'd suggest many overseas backpackers get there before most Aussies do!
I really want to get to NT, Darwin I suppose as an aside.. but Uluru, Kakadu, Olgas etc...Definitey on the bucket list.

I watched Going Bush, with Debra Mailman & Cathy Freeman last night. Simply stunning.

Lived up there in the late 90s and rather liked it.
Bad terms of refernce I suppose, most aussies fly over Darwin to party and get drunk in Bali is what i should have said.

I spent 3 months in Darwin myself once, not a long period of time, but just long enough to get to know the vide of the place, it certainly has a bit more of a frontier town feel about it.

There isn't a huge amount in Darwin itself. The whole of NT is wonderful but it's all very, very spread out and it takes a good 2-3 days to drive down the centre. The 'Top End' generally refers to Darwin, Kakadu and Katherine area, all of which have many wonderful NPs. I highly, highly, highly recommend Koolpin Gorge. The area around Alice Springs (and Uluru 5 hours away) is also gorgeous - many natural wonders like gorges and swimming holes. Kakadu needs a good week to really explore properly, with 3 days minimum.

The real attraction, for me that is, would be the "wet and stormy season". As for the dry - forget it It's a very real Aussie town - expect to see a lot of drunken bogans around - they can be very unpleasant especially during the onset of the "troppo season".
