I'm more surprised about Russia tbh.
I'm waiting for the first kiwi to mention their superior IQ (by one point) is reflecting in the medal count.
I still have some hope for the fighting roos.

Scary that NZ may probably beat us at this Olympics, as there are only a handful of opportunities left - possibly Sally Pearson, Rowing or one of the team sports.
Swimming has not been as strong as in the past, but countries such as China, France, Netherlands, Japan and South Africa have emerged to challenge the US.
The lack of depth in swimming is particularly apparent in the Relays, although the Men's 4 x 100 metre Freestyle was an unexpected poor result.
Not a great Olympics, but it is no Montreal either where there were we won no Golds and very few minor medals - which gave rise to the AIS - the Australian Institute of Sport under the then Fraser government.

Not quite:

2000 Sydney G16 S25 B17 total medals 58 (4th most)
2004 Athens G17 S16 B16 total medals 49 (4th most)

And only 1 gold now, but up to 20 total. NZ is doing well w/3 gold and 7 total

20 medals is nothing to be ashamed of. Better than you know, that country with a 1 point IQ advantage.

Yes, the pressure and hype placed on these young people has been dreadful, not to mention the the slogans " Gold Gold Gold" and Go for Gold, giving them the impression that anything less than gold is not worth having. Just being there is an achievment in itself, Yes we were great in the past but thats history now, get ready for next time.

I don't think Australia is rubbish at the olympics. It's just that we've gone in with a mostly young team, and I think the excitement of being at the olympics has gotten the better of them.

The AOC had a target of 35 medals before the Olympics so Australia shouldn't be too far off that.
