The salesman I talked to in Fl wanted several times that as their "dealer surcharge". When I asked what it was for was told the cost of writing up the paperwork. It doesn't take $2000. above and beyond the sticker for that (on a cash deal). Unfortunately they're right down the road from a high concentration senior women complex.

I still regret not buying the Accord VP but she really wanted the big engine and they were about the same price. Looked at a new one two years later when I thought they were going to total it, nearly the same car had a $5K increase in MSRP. Same goes for the new Malibu- I wouldn't touch it at its current pricing structure. It's a Chevrolet priced too close to a Buick for me, especially when nicely equipped. Around here, there's still quite a few '10 Chryslers and Dodges; a Sebring, Journey, or Avenger can likely be had for $14K. I'll buy American at that price range but for what they want for Malibus and Fusions I'll pass.
A Ford Fusion is a better car than an Accord or Camry. It is more reliable, roomier, and drives better. So there is every reason for it to cost as much or more than a Honda or Toyota.

The Malibu might be better than a Camry.

Sebrings, Avengers, no. They aren't better than anything in their class. They should cost less than Kia.

I didn't read the entire thread, so maybe this has already been posted. I've seen that added to cars in high demand. As far as I'm concerned, it makes no difference to me what a dealer puts in their stickers. The car is worth what it sells for, not what the dealer wants it to sell for. If I can buy a car cheaper at another dealer, then any extra charges assessed by a different dealer are irrelevant.

I don't think everyone's convinced yet. As for the Malibu, my Aura (corporate twin) is a rattletrap. It's not a $22K car in my eyes. The Chryslers are inferior products, but at least they sell for less. It's going to be interesting to see how heavily discounted the improved '11s will be. An '11 Chrysler 200 is going to be a nice $15K car almost a year from now.

I know this thread was getting a little stale but I thought I'd show a few photos I took of sticker prices in my area today, including the "market adjusted value" or ,in one case, "northwest adjustment value" just so people can see what I mean:

The "northwest adjustment" sticker(I live in Washington). It's hard to see but they added $1980 for it being in the northwest.

Not saying there's necessarily anything wrong with this. I guess if they can get it, fine, but I think maybe I'll wait till summer when maybe there will be more rebates.

Just because they are asking for something, doesn't mean they can get it.

If they try and start with a price that is above MSRP (unless they have added items to the car), get up and leave. When they ask why, tell them that "adjusted market value" is bull**** and you won't deal with them.

I wouldn't even bother walking into a store that puts a market adjustment on a Kia frickin' Optima. $2,000 "Northwest adjustment"??? WTF does that even mean, and what's so special about the Northwest market that it supposedly merits a $2,000 adjustment on basic everyday cars?
