This seems like a no-brainer, and it would be great. I have heard some vague explanations that this is technically more challenging than with a gas engine, and that a production version of a diesel-hybrid would be too expensive for the marketplace. So maybe it's possible, but nobody is jumping at it -- maybe they're keeping it up their sleeves for when they have to meet the more stringent government fuel standards coming in the next decade or two.

Theres diesel hybrid trains allover the place.... Its pretty much totally ridiculous to NOT harness the "wasted" energy produced by coasting/momentum and braking and storing it and using it. Probally why so many buses, trains, and other forms of public transit have been adopting it.. so many forms of auto racing as well... Its not rocket science... It just plain makes sense...

to me a hybrid is only good as an around town car where the gas engine isn't need that much but for long drives to work and back the tdi is a better deal just depends on the persons driving needs!! if your like me and drive 56 miles 5 days a week back and forth to work then the diesel will pay for itself in the long run. good seeing the update on the battery life to at 400k miles as lots of people are left in the dark on that situation as well as the cost to replace em.

I agree with you about the diesel hybrids have an engine that idels while the car is going 80-90 mph just geneerating eletricity to power the vechical and a regenative braking system to and harness all the energy.

Tdi verse a hybrid
Passat tdi 795 miles per tank and once the engine is broke in that miles per tank will increas!!
Sonata hybrid 688 miles per tank
Nissian altima 660 miles per tank
Fusion hybrid 630 miles per tank
Camry hybrid 602 miles per tank
And hybrids are not made for towing eathier so if your looking to tow stuff around then avoid a hybrid!
And these cars ran against the 2012 passat!! I'm in a 2012 jetta and it's runs at 69 mpg on the freeway iv'e gotten upto 84 mpg a few times so you tell me how driving a golf cart is better??
Oh and a tourage and Q7 and the gl350 will do 60 mpg that's impressive for an suv!!
