Finally figured that one out. Why in the heck is a metal plate called a "tag"?!

Californians say "tags" for the sticky thing. Alabama says "sticker." We say tags plural because California issues two plates.

Whatever!!
I remember watching syndicated reruns on TNT as a kid. CHiPS and Simon + Simon were my faves. Both set/filmed in California…I remember tags being used as a term for license plates at least as far as back then. I called them tags as a kid in California, as well.

Well now if you ever get pulled over because your 'tag light' is out, you'll know what it is.

I genuinely hate those stickers. They look tacky and leave sticker residue.

I’m vain about my cars and the registration should be on the plates. Or maybe I’m just a Californian and feel like home did it right?

I know that leaves a theft issue, but honestly…the windshield stickers really frost me.

I prefer the Texas way over the California way because the sticker can't get ripped off (unless someone breaks into your car) because the sticker is inside the car.

'Tags' in the Bay Area ?

Must be a your (younger) generation thing .

I've never heard anyone in the Bay Area use that term

Sometimes they are called tags.

Don't give the Wokies any idea, there are already enough one-syllablr words replaced by 5- or 10-syllable expressions.

Cars are licensed -- can't use it without a license. In the license, the particular car is identified by a Registration Number, which is more orderly than a VIN for record keeping.

Police-dom is already a joke for its erudite language. "Vacate the vehicle." Huh? "Outta the car"

Reminds me of officer Smitty and Hopkins on Sanford and son...
