I'd fight it. The judge may give u some leeway since it was only 1mph over the limit. I think this falls within the +/- margin of error of the officers radar gun.
Gun was probably set for 20, since that was the speed limit. I believe the officer noted it was at 26 and greater they give a ticket.
And many cities do not use flashers. I drive in a school zone almost everyday, and it is posted as 20 mph between 7:30 - 4:30 Mon-Fri. I do believe it might say school days only; not sure.
Just because school was technically closed, does NOT mean there were no students held over or in some special classes (music, sports, etc.) and that might be why the time was posted as it was.
As for the killings...sorry to say that police forces are reactive not proactive to the greater majority of killings. Hard to tell where the next killing will be and at exactly what time. (I believe Tom Cruise could in Minority Report.) And traffic control is sometimes just as important. Just imagine no traffic cops and the chaos that would cause.
No sympathy for the OP...accept the ticket; you were speeding. No one, including me, likes a speeding ticket, but hey; that's life if you drive.
What America's coming to is that if someone breaks the speed limit and gets caught for doing so, they think it's the cop's fault they were speeding and got caught rather than saying, "Oh, yeah, well, I did something against the law and it's my fault".
Don't like the speed limit somewhere? Work to get it changed. But obey it until it's changed (and know the law regarding school zones in your area BEFORE you drive through them - they're pretty likely to be the same all throughout your city).
I've never had to stare at school zone signs in order to read them. I have had to look at them. Maybe you need a vision test?
With cameras in place, there is no leniency unless they say so (it was like 9mph over and you're still ok here). People still got tickets and still complained. Haha. But only after a few months it was all taken down due to the way it was rolled out unfairly.
Also the school hours go 7am to 6pm here. It's clearly marked on the sign, and regardless of cameras.
Just went and checked. They have a speed limit sign with 35 and then literally right after that they have a "school zone sign" till 4:45 (where you literally have to stare at the sign to see what it says!!! I'm sorry, but do high schools now have night sessions?? In my wildest dreams I never would have thought that going 27 at around 4:30 on a major road with no pedestrians around would give me at ticket. When I went out to check I noticed that the "speed of traffic" was around 30 mph right around that school zone, so if anything, I was going below the speed of traffic when I hit the school zone. 17 f'ing minutes later and I would have been clear. It's so ridiculous and quite frankly, criminal. And its not even like a police officer stopped me, it was a f'ing camera. City spends all that money on cameras while the real criminals run wild. Again, great job Mr. Mayor, you "got" me.
There are after school programs.... and as such, you can expect kids to be out there till 4:45....
You got caught. Been there. I was once in a cluster of cars when the red lights went off and I dutifully pulled over and got a ticket. I responded with -- but what about those others? And the officer said -- they didn't stop.

sorry my friend, but you got caught. and as they say there is no excuse for breaking the law. cant read the sign? tough, its posted. if you travel that route regularly, you should have at some point noticed the sign and made the effort to read it to prevent future problems. you may get a judge to toss the ticket, or let you plea down to a lesser offense, or the judge may even suspend the sentence and ultimately dismiss the ticket provided you dont have any other violations within a certain period of time, depending on your driving record, and attitude in court.
Net time try this... Before the officer gets up to your window ... Unbutton a couple of buttons so there's some cleavage showing, admit you were exceeding the speed limit a little, then ask it it's possible to get a little spanking in lieu of a ticket. Oh wait... You're a guy. Nevermind
