OK.. I guess for some, physical pushing and popping the clutch to start a car is what they think when they hear "push start". For most, pushing a button to start a car is becoming the norm.
My -06 BMW has push button starting, but I still have to put the fob in the steering wheel and then push the button, so for me it's more of an affectation than a convenience.

What exactly is the point of having to insert the fob/key and also push a button? Who thought that up, the same people that thought it was a good idea to superglue a tablet to the dash of a Mercedes?

Pretty much. The rest of the car is delightful but that's just absurd. The fob doesn't even unlock the doors by proximity, one still has to push the button. The "comfort key" is an option, natch.
As for that Mercedes tablet thing, what the hell??? It might not be so bad if it didn't look like a $100 tablet glued to the dash.....and it probably has a nicely locked down operating system so you can't do useful stuff with ti.
For the 2015 Taurus, you only need to have the key fob in the proximity of the vehicle and it auto unlocks the driver's door without pushing any buttons on the key fob. So, you walk up to the vehicle, the door is unlocked and you get in and push the button on the dash. As long as your foot is on the brake, it will start.

You need to upgrade
I guess without the push start button, we may not have auto start/stop.
True story. Dad is going to airport. Mom goes along to take car and go shopping. Mom goes to mall, shops, comes back to car. Can't start it because Dad has the fob in pocket at 30,000 feet
BMW has a warning as soon as the key steps out while the engine is still on. Also, how did mom lock the car after parking it?

Did they have the comfort access option for '06? If you simply didn't choose it, that's why you still have to use the key. They are not going to make a key-slot ignition and a push-button for the same car model. They just do the push-button for every car and you have to "suffer" with putting the fob in too.

see above
Anyway, another beneficial feature is you can run inside for a quick second but still lock your doors and keep the engine running. Done this more times than I can count.
I walk a lot but walking hundreds of miles a week would not be doable. Putting a key in an ignition or lock only takes me 2 seconds.
What's your point? Why waste resources on keys when you don't need them? Just for the sake of nostalgia? That metal, plastic, and other materials can be better used elsewhere. No need to keep fancy mechanical lock mechanisms and laser cut keys. You might consider progression in technology and efficiency lazy; but I don't see it that way.
Btw, I am able to run 100s of miles per week. You must be lazy if you can't walk it.

.
I got it used so I didn't have the option. It's mentioned in the owner's manual, so must have been available.
