Standards are useful if they're cheaper than automatics, and I had several "stripper" cars and pick ups with standards.

I love my manual trans except when driving in bumper to bumper grid lock traffic or hours on end. I think everyone and their grandmother was driving home from the holiday yesterday. It was brutal and I'm surprised my clutch is still working.

My first two cars were manuals so I will always be biased towards manual
I just bought a Ford Focus hatchback manual, it doesn't have much power but it can be fun to drive.

Aside from the fun factor, I think manual transmissions last longer and are cheaper to fix (clutch) than automatic transmissions.
And if your battery dies, you just need to get somebody to push your car to start it.

Now, if you are looking at used cars, you can often get a better deal on a manual since they don't usually sell as well as automatics. I've been watching a few that I like, just can't buy at this time, and the prices have dropped about $1,500-2,000 over the past couple of months that they have stayed on the lot. And they often start out a good bit cheaper than the autos.

As long as I can have a choice, I will always prefer a manual. My first car was an auto (two trans issues in 80K miles) and the one just before my current car was an auto since my kids were driving it too. But no more for me as long as I can operate a clutch.

I love a stick shift and owned a few manuals in my driving years. They're not practical in Houston because of our bad traffic, however. Shifting gears constantly in stop and go traffic makes for worn out legs and worn out transmissions.

2003 VW Jetta Diesel....90 hp and I think around 155 ft lbs of torque. Still fun to drive It took me over a year to find the car BECAUSE I wanted it to be a manual.

Honestly, low power cars are great matches for manuals because you get to extract every bit of power out of it. Nothing kills a lower power car like a slush box.

It doesn't matter what types of car it is. People enjoy driving manual car cause they like to shift gears. Best time I have driving manual cars wasn't my sport car. It was a 1984 civic manual with no power steering.

I have had manual transmission inexpensive cars over the years.
Both 4 cylinder.
And both were fast enough to be fun to drive.
