The difference is that Audi and some of the German automakers seem to get a pass on reliability and don't seem to be held to the same standards as other manufacturers. If their quality has improved from 50% reliability to 70%, yes technically that is an improvement. However, if other vehicles of the same year range have a 95% reliability rate, there is still an issue. They are rarely held to the same reliability expectation as say a Toyota, Honda, etc..... who routinely have 85-95% reliability ratings simply because they are considered a luxury brand.
Once they have the same reliability as typical on some of the other vehicles I mentioned I'll be impressed. For the cost of those vehicles reliability and quality should be above average.
Have a friend who ran the parts department at Honda and Volkswagon. He said buy Honda.
I had an independent import mechanic tell me very recently, if your are looking at Audi or Acura, buy the Acura. Actually, he said buy Toyota/Lexus or Honda/Acura every time over Audi. I don't have a dog in this hunt, but just telling you what he said. He also said he couldn't make a living off the Honda and Toyota brands, they are too reliable.
I would not buy German or Swedish ( had a Volvo which was a POS) as I do not turn wrenches anymore. If you can do your own maintenance, then I think it would work and would be a lot of fun to drive. Wife's nephew enjoys working on cars and they have been happy with their vintage BMWs. However, I am happy with our Lexus and will probably buy another. I was disappointed in our last Accord ('03 6cyl as it had more problems than our other 4 bangers and body integrity was not impressive).
