The way I calculated it, the difference between 40 mpg and 50 mpg is 5 gal/1000 miles, so less than $200 over the course of a year. BTW That's the same savings you'd achieve going from 18 to 20 mpg.

From what I've read the niro can get up to 60. Difference is it doesn't look weird, so it may not sell so well.

The Ford C-Max certainly seems to have been a failure, I never see them on the road
This is a stealth car. It's still a mystery why Ford gave it zero marketing. The first year had a lot of reliability issues as did maybe the plug in??? If anyone has any anecdotes on later models, please post them here while I still have a chance to buy the extended warranty. Of course the hybrid components are warrantied for 8 yrs so there may be no point in an EW, anyway.

Besides ours, I see a lot of white ones as part of various company and public agency fleets. perhaps Ford was unwilling to spend the money to compete with the Prius for the regular consumer, and just marketed to the larger purchasers.

The issue with the C-Max is that Ford does zero marketing of the vehicle in the US. In Europe they are popular cars, especially in the UK where I see them all the time.

Because of the total lack of US marketing, used prices are dirty cheap. I would strongly recommend this car for anyone looking for an efficient, reliable commuter.
Also they kind of bungled the launch with terrible reliability and grossly overstated mileage. It's kind of tough to market your way out of that. I don't know if they fixed the reliability issues later in the run but the overstated mileage and poor reliability is why I didn't even look at it.
