While I do agree that its crazy we are still relying on internal combustion powered vehicles in 2018, I do not see this coming anytime soon, it would too much of a profit killer.
Whatever power source is used for transportation, it MUST be able to be metered out to the public, or it will never see the light of day. The Invention Secrecy Act of 1951 is the reason why we dont see hovering cars or alternative powered cars, its not that the tech for these things does not exist, its just that they are not profitable enough compared to ICE.
They should take that idea and use it for melting ice and snow in northern climates to get rid of the use of road salt and help with portholes by montering the extream temperature of the roads.
So what do I drive when I go travel on dirt roads in upstate Maine when I go camping/hunting for a week? I'm so far from a gas station I usually have to take a few cans of gas with me from the last station I pass?
How well does that arm work in a blizzard with standing snow on the surface of the road? What if the rails get clogged with snow/ice?
While I welcome the new tech, I think we are far off from ICE vehicles being totally eliminated.
