4/10. Used to be better but Northern Virginia's poor traffic engineering has ruined my driving. No orderly grid of streets, everything is a total mess, you have to change 3 lanes in 1-2 blocks, and sometimes you can't even tell which lane is which.
On a more serious note, in the age of technology from traffic cameras, to dashcams, to cops with laser radar that can see you from far far far away I would say I am a far better driver than I was years ago.
I try to avoid traffic as much as possible, even taking regular routes I will avoid red lights by going right whenever I can. I try to think ahead to see what other drivers are thinking before they do something stupid so I can be better prepared.
frankly, I'm not very good but I try hard, it's just that there seems to be far too many buttons, displays and controls to be concerned about these days. I've found that the triangle button will flash my lights continuously if I press it and it probably helps people see me. More people should use this in my opinion. I'm something of a math whiz and according to my calculations, the faster I go, the less I'm on the road and the fewer people I encounter so get in and get out is my motto, especially when merging into the no speed limit roads that don't have any stop lights.
I WAS a very good driver. Now, I would say 7 or 8. The reason: I drive with hand controls. I have become very good with them, but I am honest enough to admit that I am not as good as I used to be. My reaction skills along with observing and predicting what other drivers may do, is the same as always. My main issue is braking smoothly. I have no trouble braking, but it's very difficult on these hand controls. On and older van, I had no problems, but this newer one with the heavy duty brakes is a challenge. That means I compensate by braking a little earlier than normal, not too much earlier though. In traffic though, that is not always possible so I'm on the brakes too much. Other than that, I'm fine.
I HAD to take one in my 20s because I got caught being stupid.
Well, I’m in my 80’s and I didn’t have to take it. I just wanted to improve my driving skills, before some young kid with a cell phone glued to his ear starts hollering “get that old guy off the road, he’s too old to drive”.
Plus I got a discount on my insurance, so I can buy more diesel for my motorhome with my Social Security check.
I would give myself solid 8. Been driving a Hellcat the last few years as a daily driver, and I'm still here to talk about it.
