Why do car dealers have car salespeople?? they cannot do anything. They are more like a greeter. Here is what happens. You go in, get a salesperson, test drive the car if you like it you sit with the "salesperson" try to make a reasonable deal, THEN it begins..............Your salesperson goes to the "sales manager" who really is the main person here and the sales manager makes a "new deal" sends the salesperson back to tell you well....................were close. BUT the boss says its gonna take 3000 more etc...

How I would sooooooooooo not want to be a car salesperson!! They cannot do anything, they cannot make their own deals, It is all up to the sales manager so why even have a car salesperson?? they cant make their own deals. How sad it is for that salesperson that their income is governed by their boss. SO even if there was just a little profit and the salesperson really needed the sale it was denied by his boss

so really, what good are salespeople?? their hands are so tied they cant make deals. all they do is become a "puppet" to the sales manager. Why doesn't the sales manager get the crappy job of going back to a customer that you know would buy the car at a reasonable price BUT you as the salesperson have to be the bad guy???

any car salespeople here want to give me your opinion??

FYI.... I am NOT a car salesperson I DID try once in the 80s never AGAIN!!...

One sales manager CANT make 10/20 deals at the same time. Sales people are there as a buffer.
You can buy a car straight through online sales bypassing the salespeople

Their job is to play this game to maximize profits for the dealers. If they can do that, they earn their pay

I live very near the largest Ford dealer in the USA they have 12 sales managers and 40 salespeople. Let me give you a scenario...

A customer comes in with no trade wants to buy a new Ford Escape. The dealership is selling them for $18,100 NOT including the $599 dealer fee and $125.00 doc fee. So let's say for the sake of typing. let's say the sale complete with tax tag fees is $19,850.00. Let's say the customer says $19,000 and you have a deal...

Now, instead of running to the "boss" that is gonna make you go back and say "no" why cant the salesperson have a book with each vehicle's cost, commission if sold at x amount and IF the car falls within that margin just allow the salesperson to make their own deals?? A greedy BOSS takes money away from you and that is what I don't like!

Let's say the salesperson can STILL sell the car for say $19,500.00 all in for the customer The dealership makes a profit, the salesperson has a sale and some control over their income and everyone wins...

also, I can't imagine selling a car for $40,000 and getting a $300 commission I know it happens sure must depressing as a salesperson to see 40 grand coming in and they get $300...

Lastly, do all 50 states have a "dealer fee" I am all for-profit but these dealer fees suck some are upwards of $1000.00

Now without being an expert on this, I have a hunch the entire conversation between salesperson and sales manager is a choreographed game with predetermined outcomes that they have down to a tee due to them doing it several times a day every day of the week for an extended time period.

I highly doubt that because there are way too many scenarios and different customer situations.

It’s a game dude. The sales guy knows exactly the numbers on the cars they sell. If you’re making a deal and it takes over a hour start to finish you already lost.
Go in make your best deal out the door, if they come back with anything other than yes get up walk out

I agree, but you're missing my point, I feel bad for these salespeople there PUPPETS that have some """""""""""BOSS"""""""""""" taking food off their table when its not necessary.

I feel car salespeople SHOULD have some way to make their own deal ( to a point) but the way the business is set now. many go to work and can't do a thing except what the boss says

I know for a fact there are some deals that would net the dealership a $1000 profit and perhaps a 100 or more commission for the sales rep. BUT the GREEDY """BOSS"""""""" Just took that $$ away from the dealership and the salesperson because the """""""""BOSS""""""" wanted a profit of $1,800 NO LESS.

so the sale person loses all thanks to a greedy boss.

I sure would HATE a JOB where someone else is in CONTROL of what I earn. especially when If given the chance (by having a book of costs etc... ) that the salesperson can make their own deal at least to some degree. I realize when trade-in"s are involeed it can be a lot more tricky.

You are missing a piece of the game. The salesperson is there to represent you - he is "on your side" - get it?
I remember giving it a go with a Honda car dealership when I was young. I was appalled at the game, was called stupid by the mangers and lasted maybe a month.
