Oh, definitely the PBY Catalina. Relatively far away from front line duty, but still pulling in a significant war effort spotting subs and performing search & rescue supply missions. Plus the romance of it is just overpowering for me - I imagine myself puttering into a seaplane base on some sun-kissed shore, and buying one after the war for fishing trips and sightseeing.
A Japanese torpedo plane attacking battleship row. Must have been an awesome and proud experience for a pilot to see all those big enemy ships explode and burn.
Well, depends on what I'd be doing. I'd love to fly in an old Martin or Catalina. I've always had this dream of learning to fly one and then buying one, learning to maintain it, and outfitting it like a flying/floating mobile home. Bed, tube, generator, small kitchen (enough to cook for one or two) and a trusty dog and a beautiful babe in the cockpit with me...island hopping in the Caribbean and Pacific. The fantasy is overwhelming.
As far as combat goes I'd love to test out a P-51D or a P-38. Fun stuff.
IMO patriotism is a less loaded and more accurate word for the allegiance Charles expressed.
I'm sure most of the Japanese pilots were just as patriotic if not more so.
