Likely, but I wouldn't be so sure. The Brewers are currently 1 game back of the Wildcard, and let's say they absolute tank like finish 4-14 type and finish sub .500. I'd actually make a stronger case for Yelich's MVP worthiness in that scenario because the team was so bad when he got hurt.
With apologies to the D'Backs, Phillies, and Mets fans on this board I'm taking those 3 out of the running in the Wildcard now. Maybe if those 3 teams each win their remaining games this week, the Brewers AND Cubs and or Nats drop both their remaining games maybe we'll talk again for the weekend, but right now if you aren't closer than 3 back it's probably not going to happen, and all 3 of those teams (D'Backs, Phillies, Mets) are all as close or closer to the Giants in the standings than they are to the Cubs for the 2nd Wildcard. A lot can change in a couple of days; i.e. the Phillies sweep the Braves, the Brewers lose the final 3 to the Padres, the Nats lose the final 2 to the Cards and the Cubs lose the final 2 to the Reds and the opening game to St. Louis and all of a sudden the Phillies go from 5 back of the Cubs (5.5 back of the Nats & 4 back of the Brewers) to 2 back of the Cubs, 3 back of the Nats, and 1 back of the Brewers and propel themselves back in, but I just don't see it happening. Those 3 too inconsistent and really not playing well.
Brewers and Cubs both won while the Nats lost to the Cards, so the Central remains unchanged (Cards 2 up on Cubs, 3 on the Brewers) while in the Wildcard the Brewers remain 1 behind the Cubs, but the Cubs are now just a half game behind Washington for home field with the Brewers a game and a half behind. Mets lost to the Rockies so they are back tied with the Phillies, and after losing 6 of 7 to the Reds and Mets the D'Backs blew a late lead only to come back and win themselves and they are 5.5 out, but that's the last I'll talk about them this year barring a 6-0 week from one of them while someone else has an 0-6 week above them. So, it looks like in both the AL and NL we have 3 teams for 2 spots. In the AL it's the Indians, Rays & A's, in the NL we have 4 teams for 3 spots: Cards, Cubs and Brewers all in a fight for the Central with the 2 losing out against the Nats in the Wildcard. Over in the AL, the Rays and Indians both had the night off while the A's just had an abysmal loss at home to the Royals giving up 2 runs in the 9th to lose 6-5, so they are 1 up on the idle Rays while the Indians stay 1.5 games behind the Rays.
In what has otherwise been a mostly painful, dull season, the Giants had a nice moment yesterday. They were in Boston to play the Sox, and there was Yastrzemski playing the wall in left field. Of course it was SF's rookie Mike Yastrzemski, but his granddad Carl and his father were on hand to watch. Mike gave them a reason to celebrate by launching his 20th home run into centerfield.
In the NL last night the Cards and Cubs lose while the Cubs, Phillies, and Mets win. Brewers tie the Cubs in the standings, 2 games back of the Cards in the Central, and tied for the 2nd Wildcard 1.5 games behind the Nats for WC1. Phillies and Mets trying to stay in at 4 back, but they both picked up a win while the team in front of them lost so they survive for another day.
In the AL, the Rays lose to the Dodgers while the Indians beat the Tigers and the A's beat the Royals. The Indians improve to just a half game behind the Rays while the A's up their lead to 2 games over the Rays for home field in the Wildcard game.
Pirates IMO are one of MLB's worst teams the last several weeks.
