There is a possibility that my fiance and I will be relocating to the area. We have always wanted to live in the area, eventually and this may be our opportunity. We will be visiting the 3rd week of July. On this visit, we will be looking around the area (Bend, Sisters, Redmond, etc.) to get a feel for the surroundings, the people, the town, etc. Also, on this trip, I will speaking to a prospective employer in Sun River.

We understand the weather, which is one of the reason we want to move there (four seasons). We are outdoors people who hunt, fish, bike, hike, etc. Also, we enjoy the smaller town feel and downtown Bend seems like a great spot with good shops, eateries, night life, etc.

The concern.....

My fiance has a pretty good job currently and I recently became unemployed. The job market in our area isn't great, as if is where anywhere, and this is pretty close to a done deal with regards to the Sun River job. However, more than likely the job will not pay enough initially for my fiance to make the immediate move with me. It may be 6 to 9 months, or until she gets a job in the Bend area before she actually moves. We have been together almost 8 years and engaged 6 months so we are comfortable with possibly having to do this. However, we also know that it will not be easy.

Any suggestions, advice, information on the area, places to rent, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing the replies.

Happy July 4th!

You don't mention what your fiancee does, but getting a job in the Bend area in almost any profession is tough right now and the job market will likely not get much better for quite a while. Sunriver is a resort and much of the housing is upscale and transitional - i.e., vacation rental properties - and expensive. We lived in Sunriver for several weeks when we first moved to the Bend area and found a small apartment for a fairly reasonable price in the Sunriver area (not in the actual resort), but we were happy when we moved to Bend - much more to do and better housing choices. We lived in Sunriver in early winter and sometimes the road from Sunriver to Bend was absolutely treacherous to drive and that is true every winter on some days.

Central Oregon is certainly the right place to find all of the things the two of you enjoy. Your fiancee will have a hard time finding a job while living somewhere else, so you might think about finding an inexpensive place in LaPine (south of Sunriver) for the two of you and when she lands a job, then you could move to Bend.

I believe there are several, although I don't know which exact ones. You might also look into vacation rental homes. Bend is full of those and often times they are cheaper than a hotel and feel a little more home like. Check VRBO and Craigslist to see what might be available.
