Here's a new thermal composite image from the EO-1 Advanced Land Imager satellite. I think this shows quite clearly where the current flow front is headed, to the Marketplace, and the distance to the original flow front (pointed at the word "Pahoa"), which now appears as cold (black).

OpenD - thanks again for all the great information. You have done us all a great service. Looks like things are stalled. I had asked earlier if the dark areas I saw were old lava flows. Now from looking at ground maps I think some of that is the fire break they created. Wonder if that has something to do with the stall.

Here's today's report from your first link above (bolded emphasis is mine) Looks like Vog is a bigger problem today than the lava flow dangers. Mahalo Ke Akua:
Eruption Information Update For Sunday December 28th At 7:45AM

This is an eruption and lava flow information update for Sunday December 28th at 7:45AM.
This morning’s assessment shows that the flow front remains active however very sluggish and has advanced approximately 10 yards since yesterday afternoon. Some widening was noted and the front is approximately 30 yards wide at this time. The front or leading edge remains .6 miles upslope of the Highway 130 and Pahoa Village Road intersection and approximately 690 yards from the Pahoa Market Place complex.

The surface breakouts and activity along both margins continues upslope of the front however current activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities. Civil Defense and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory personnel are maintaining close observations of the flow. Residents and businesses down slope will be kept informed of any changes in flow activity, advancement, and status.
Smoke and combined VOG conditions were moderate this morning with light variable winds causing the smoke and VOG to settle across the entire eastern areas from Puna through Hilo. Smoke and VOG conditions may increase in some areas and individuals that may be sensitive or have respiratory problems are advised to take necessary precautions and to remain indoors.

Things have been pretty quiet, and the front has been stalled for a week, although a new breakout upslope could create a new front, northeast of the two that have been top of the local news the last few months. Refer to "Additional Breakouts" on the thermal map.

Meanwhile the threat assessment is now so much lower that officials announced today they will close Railroad Avenue tomorrow for repairs, not to reopen it again unless Hwy 130 is breached at some point in the future.

They said they are closing it to make repairs, and keeping it closed... presumably to preserve it until and unless it is needed...

It's not a well built road, it doesn't meet public road standards, and it can't really handle heavy traffic. For emergency use only.

Here's an article about it, pictures and video from when it was finished. Two lane gravel road, not built for heavy traffic.

Flipping thru channels - Oceanic channel 1128 (HD) and 128 are channels literally called "Pahoa".

2 Camera's with no sound as a live video feed on the front. And a scrolling update on the bottom of the screen.
