I am so relieved for the people of Pahoa... but it ain't over till the fire lady sings, so anything can still happen. But so far this sounds like amazingly great news for the new year. I can't imagine how it must be for the residents there. Do we leave, do we stay? It's home for so many families for decades. Tough decisions. Thanks to OpenD and everyone for keeping us on top of this. It's not enough to read the dry reports. Having a conversation with people who are there on the BI makes it easier to get a handle on it.

Thanks R_Cowgirl... I appreciate it... and on the side, I honestly never would have guessed what you now say your alias really stands for...

The Kilauea eruption in Puna district has been going on continuously since 1983. It's the longest running lava show in the world. It swells and recedes and confounds predictions, but very rarely conforms to people's stereotypes of what real day to day life this close to a volcanic eruption is actually like.

I started this thread primarily to give folks who were not actually in the line of fire a place to get reliable factual updates, without having to look at a number of info sources themselves. Along the way I think it has became an interesting archive of various interests and concerns and speculation about a natural phenomenon which affects thousands of residents of Puna District, and beyond.

And it's not over yet... !!!

"A lava breakout 765 yards upslope appears poised to become the new flow front. Civil defense reports the active breakout is on the north side of the flow and has advanced down slope to an area near the stalled front. The breakout has advanced 200 yards per day over the past two days and is .6 miles from Highway 130 and is to the west or mauka of the police and fire stations, civil defense said in an 11:30 p.m. update."

Here's an updated map that shows the various stalled fronts, as well as the recent breakouts and the current slowmoving front, which is now about .4 mile from the road.

The flow front hasn't budged in about two weeks. Apparently a new flow opened up way mauka, which is the best news we could hope for as that will divert lava flow.

It seems oddly appropriate that you should inquire as to OD's whereabouts in this very thread. Unfortunately, our much beloved, and knowledgable OD, in his Aristotelian, and oft Quixotic quest for the truth, took it upon himself to verify wether or not the notion of 'Sacrificing a virgin to Pele in order to quell her anger and halt the eruption,' was indeed, factual or merely a myth. Sad to say, he tossed himself into the raging molten pool of liquid rock at the Pu'u O'o vent. The eruption has continued un-abated.

Evidently something didn't work out

(uuurrrppp, hope this helps)
