Thanks, J

Here the pertinent excerpt from this morning's Civil Defense alert... the breakout lava flow is still active but has slowed down at about 2.4 miles from the village.

Quote:
Eruption Information Update For Friday December 5th At 8:00 AM

This is an eruption and lava flow update for Friday December 5th at 8:00 AM.

This morning’s assessment shows that the flow front continues to show signs of advancement however has slowed. The active flow front remains approximately 2.4 miles upslope of the Highway 130 and Pahoa Village Road intersection. The flow had advanced approximately 145 yards since yesterday. Current activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities and Civil Defense and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory personnel are maintaining close observations of flow activity. Residents down slope will be kept informed of any changes in flow activity, advancement, and status.

Can Pahoa be this lucky?! ...for the lava to burn only one house and for it to stop a few yards away from cutting Puna off...i would be shocked if that was the case. Anything like this happen before, to be this close to a disastrous situation and avoid it at the very last minute?

Lava flows depend on the amount of magma being pushed out from underground (to put it simply). If the magma chamber that's been producing the latest flow gets emptied out, then the flow will stop. I don't think that anyone besides Pele can tell when the flow will stop, if it has stopped for good, or when it might start up again. Although certainly the volcanologists are working hard on trying to figure that out.

In 1984 lava came within four miles of Hilo town before it stopped.

The newspaper today doesn't seem as optimistic as you are.

"Lava is continuing its slow advance on a northeast path that could bring it to the Pahoa Marketplace near the intersection of Pahoa Village Road and Highway 130.

Hawaii County Civil Defense estimates the lava moved about 300 yards since Tuesday and is about 2.1 miles above the intersection after flying over the flow Wednesday morning."
