Well, it looks like the Ironman competition is relocating to Utah.

Yes, but some have speculated that it will never return. I'm not familiar with the details etc., to have an opinion either way on that, but merely offer the doubt by others for your consideration.

It is isn't in Kona, it might as well not exist, IMHO..

I see nothing in the article that suggests that

You can speculate all you want. Doesn't really mean anything in the real world.

The average high in St. George in May is 86 degrees, very similar to the average high in Kailua-Kona of 83 degrees. However, the average low in St. George is about 57, which the athletes might very well appreciate after working up a sweat during the day. Of course there is no ocean anywhere near St. George, though they do have a couple of lakes that are each about one mile across, so maybe they'll use those for the swimming portion of the event.

There is absolutely no equivalent to the Kona tourist zone or the Kohala resort area in St. George. However, Las Vegas is only about two hours down the road. It'll be interesting to see how the athletes feel about the relative merits of the two locations.

I was in St. George last week. It seemed like a perfectly adequate site for a one-year relocation of the Iron Man.

While there's nothing to support that Iron Man won't be back in Hawaii next year, I would have some concern in the back of my head that the organizers come to really love Utah more than Hawaii in terms of attractions nearby, terrain, cost, etc., and decide after the fact to not come back. Again, nothing to support that this will happen, just me thinking about possibilities. It wouldn't be the first time that organizations/people/etc. went back on their word for various reasons.

To be clear, it's the Ironman world championship that's relocating to Utah this year. The chances of Ironman permanently pulling out of Kona are practically zero IMO. As a world championship site? Who knows, maybe so.

BTW, they've added Juneau, AK into the mix for one of their races. https://www.alaskapublic.org/2021/08...ace-in-juneau/
