I thought it would be fun to discuss favorite tomes that have a massive following, but for whatever reason have not been turned into movies yet.
For me it's "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon. I looooveee this series of books and have re-read many times.
The books are fascinating, well researched, humorous, sexy, romantic and heartbreaking. They area little hard to classify in any one genre -- part historical fiction, part sci-fi, part romance. I guess!
I suppose that's why no movie has been made -- too long and complex!
I've always thought that The Secret History by Donna Tartt would make a good movie. When I first read it I pictured Gwyneth Paltrow as one of the characters, but she's a bit long in the tooth now.

I've got to say that I wish that no books were made into movies -- for me, movies are never as good as the written word (well, maybe except for Kramer vs. Kramer).
However! I've got to agree with your The Secret History suggestion. I absolutely LOVED that book -- and it truly read like a film.
I agree -- most books turned into movies are disappointing.
I will never forget the awful TV movie of the "The Thornbirds." (I may be dating myself). They had some good casting --- including screen legend Jean Simmons as Fiona -- but they cast the main character completely against her type in the book. And then of couse they cut it to shreds, leaving our important subplots, etc. Terrible!
Then again -- "Jaws" was awesome -- way better than the book. As was "In Her Shoes" (Jennifer Wiener book).

That reminds me of when the film of The Prince of Tides came out. I had read the book, so there was no way that I was going to see the movie, but my friend went to see it.
The next day, I asked her what she thought about the whole tiger thing.
"What tiger?" she asked.
"What do you mean WHAT tiger? I'm talking about THE tiger!" I answered.
"There was no tiger in the movie," she said.
Sometimes the changes that have to be made keep to the spirit of the book, like, High Fidelity was moved to Chicago from London, but the dialogue and the humor and the characters stayed true to Hornby's story. But then, the movie of Mysteries of Pittsburgh was a hot mess.
Remember that Wally Lamb book from the 90s: She's Come Undone?
I'd always thought it would be a good movie...well now that we have the Oprah network, maybe it will be.
It would be a great role for an actress who is not thin and beautiful.
Oh Dandj...do I agree! I read Prince of Tides first and saw the movie was kept waiting for certain scenes...but they never came. Sometimes I think I need to see the movie years after reading and maybe I wouldn't notice the changes. The last few have been just like that and such a let down.
I would love to see the Mitford series made into a movie...or two.
