Just get in your car, don't question rt.60 and it will eventually take you where you need to go. You can try other ways, around this or around that because you will be tempted- it will always take longer, just stay on 60 and arrive happy and rested.
Outbound from Mass Ave to Alewife Brook to Rt 2 isnt that bad, if the left onto Alewife is backed up you can go to Lake St to Rt 2. Coming back if you get off the Alewife station stop then cut left before the station it can be manageable.

Where would you get on/off Rt 60 from Somerville? I thought 60 was only in Belmont.

Go up Mass Ave to Arlington Center, Rt 60/Pleasant street goes right through the middle.

Sometimes I take Lake St and cut up as well.

I was about to type the same. Type the addresses of your apartment and your workplace into the Waze app for several days in a row at the time when you think you'd be leaving for work. That will give you a good sense of how long it will take.
