OP, what is the maximum commute you're thinking? Are you required in the office every day? Do you work "traditional" hours or are they flexible?

About 40 minutes sounds reasonable to me. And yeah, I need to be at office everyday and can get there anytime before 9. Hours are a little bit flexible though.

It's a reverse commute but due to the HOV lane taking out a lane on the side of the road you'd be driving on each way, there is somewhat heavier volume even though it tends to move. The bigger issue is depending on where you start from in Back Bay you can get stuck in very substantial local traffic until you can make it onto the Expressway.

Its tough to gauge in the summer because so many people take long vacations, sometimes a month or more, during the summer. My traffic is so much less now, except for the portion of 495 S on Friday afternoons, that I have to drive on.

I tried to look up and compare Cambridge, Somerville, Back Bay areas. For some reason, Kenmore Square area seems very popular for singles. I don't know how it is in reality.

Kenmore is close to a lot of colleges, even more so than Cambridge, so it makes sense that the median age is lower. It's a fun neighborhood, with good restaurants and green spaces.

It's overachieving tech students/grad students and start up workers living in their labs. It will make perfect sense when you spend any time there.

Oh, I know the T doesn't make sense for the work commute, I was speaking more generally. I was getting the impression that the OP would avoid the subway entirely which is kind of ridiculous.
