Watertown is a poor man's newton and it's directly connected to the city via the express bus system which is more convenient than commuter rail (and sometimes more convenient than subway)

Quincy. You can fetch a nice SFH within walking distance of the Redline (and CR if near Quincy Center) with your budget.

Yes, ty. We looked at Newton but just like you mentioned another poster suggested to stay away unless we have a million. We could go that Hugh in theory but that would make us absolutely house poor. It is not worth it. Our move is primary career related as we are not growing at all in our area. Boston was suggested as a great tech hub and we are impressed so far.

Yes, was also going to suggest Waltham. Right next to Newton and has some cool areas with shops and restaurants.

Where is the OP commuting to though? In many instances, such as the Seaport, using a commuter rail line from the north doesn't make as much sense as using one from the south.

I would rent to see how you like the different towns. We have 4 dogs and were able to rent. We were upfront with potential landlords....we did have a lot of rejections, but there are also pet lovers here who understand and were willing to rent to us. We rented for 18 months and then moved to a town 30 minutes north. We would have regretted purchasing in the town where we rented. (I also wanted to mention that we have rented in 3 states with 4 dogs and have never had an issue and always got our full deposit back).

This is reassuring. I will explore but I expect rejections.

I am not sure where you are from but MA was not our first choice. It’s definitely very expensive and tax heave. I hear there is a car tax too. But it is very good place for jobs if you are in tech. I think it’s actually best on east coast. This is why we are looking very seriously into Boston.

Oh, I get why you would be. Usually excellent school systems as well. I was born in Newton and grew up in Brookline. I used to take the Green line to work each day. Later, I moved to Rhode Island then back to Mass (Norwood). Terribly expensive state to live in. Housing so expensive! I've been living in Cincinnati for 20 years and soon will be moving to either Asheville or Charlotte area.
