Interesting. I didn't realize they had slashed their police dept by so much.

Sounds like Burlington has changed a lot over the past decade or and not necessarily for the better.

It has changed. The waterfront which was vacant/decaying space in the mid 90s is now beautiful parks and thriving restaurants and apartment spaces. The quality of the restaurant / food establishments jumped considerably. Not surprisingly, while it already had high costs, its become very expensive as it gentrified. The big loss is in music venues downtown.

It's such a great little city. People who get their information from google searches wouldn't know it, but that's fine. Let them live in fear. I look forward to my multiple visits each year, thankfully I still have enough friends there to stay and go out with. They all love it.

Wait, what??? YOU are saying we should take your word as an out of stater, over the accounts of local posters who actually live there? Interesting.

Oh, I forgot the ECHO aquarium and science space. Another great addition to the Burlington waterfront. Burlington is fantastic. It's one of my top potential retirement spots if I choose to move. Hopefully scared little conservative krime kinksters stick to they're fears and keep away. They add nothing to a community.

Burlington is nice, no one said it wasn't. It's just not a place I would ever expect to see murders happening amongst black and middle eastern men...but here we are.

Why wouldn't you? Where there are humans, there are murders. There always has been, there always will be.

Thankfully, the murder rate has dropped (per capita) a great deal in the USA over the last 4-5 decades.

I'd link but city data would consider it a competitor site:

USA
1970 8.8 murders per 100,000
1980 10.4 murders per 100,000
1990 9.4 murders per 100,000
2000 5.9 murders per 100,000
2010 5.2 murders per 100,000
2020 not available on the data set I'm looking at now, likely an uptick due to the pandemic though

Between 1980 and 2010 a 50% decline in murder rate (and yes, data collection methods the same).

It's nice to visit, otherwise living downtown subjects you to break-ins and property crimes. Bike thefts are up dramatically. Drug abuse is rampant (ODs were up nearly 40 percent in recent years). Homelessness is a major problem. The food options are limited and most are TERRIBLE, actually. Unless you're in either the drug/party/student scene or a native Vermonter the opportunities for social connection are limited because many people are insular and averse to newcomers. It costs a small fortune relative to its rural nature and they get you coming and going on taxes. Winter lasts 7 months followed by the "mud season." Church Street is their claim to fame, and that amounts to a bunch of over-hyped overpriced dining and drinking spots. I think even the "mall" they had downtown has pretty much gone to the skids. There is zero diversity in political representation and it shows in how this city is run. But don't let your car idle/warm up in winter for more than 5 minutes because some busy-body will call the police and have you fined.

Don't question him. Prepare to hear about some "show" he recently saw there and how awesome it was. All is therefore rosy.

And as usual, our defundabolish amigo has conveniently omitted the data from years when defundabolish actually took place - needless to say, can't show numbers that go against the agenda. I'll help him out - 7.8 per 100,000 compared to 5.2 in pre-defubdabolish, pre-BLMillionaire 2010, I'm sure even a centered green new marxism studies PhD like him can do the math.
