Mt vernon has nice areas too. I'd say it's more dangerous than NYC as a whole but maybe similar to Boston.

NJ has some rougher cities but they are not exactly right outside NYC limits... Newark, Orange, East Orange, Elizabeth probably all worse than NYC overall but the lions share of NYC suburbs are safe.

I guess it's no big deal though since no one died.

This happened in Springfield but it's pretty disturbing:

I think MA is a small enough state that if terrible things are happening in New Bedford, Worcester, Springfield, and Brockton that people in Boston should still feel worried.

Which major city do you suggest for pleasant, crime-free summers?

If it helps you sleep at night though, I do agree this has been a pretty miserable summer in Boston, with the rain and all.

I don't think any major cities have 0 crime...but plenty of cities have a lot less than Boston.

I'm not really sure why there's such a debate here. It seems like some people have different opinions on what bad crime is. Some folks don't seem to think murders happening every other week and shootings happening every other day is a big deal, others do.

I think it's about relative perception.

Is even 1 murder 1 too many? Sure, but that's not realistic, and it's a recipe for anxiety and anger to demand such perfection.

Is Boston doing better than many comparable cities in this statistic? Sure, but that doesn't mean that there still isn't room to do better.

I see people looking at the forest and people looking at the trees. The forest looks fine even if some trees don't.

I guess the question is why are people feeling the need to shoot at each other every weekend? Like how did they get to where they are in life that they think it's ok to shoot someone else because they're mad or because it gives them a thrill? Boston has a lot to offer in terms of health and education that it does make you wonder how anyone living IN Boston could think this way.
