A lot of the gang presence/tradition in Providence is "relatively" new (talking 90s). Probably more comparable to the North Shore (East Boston/Chelsea/Revere/Lynn) in characteristics, than Roxbury/Dorchester. Also, less organized gangs does not necessarily mean fewer people getting killed (see a lot of Southern cities and lately, Providence...).

Most of the gangs from the 90s were Southeast Asian and are no longer around. The gangs that are still around from back then include the Latin Kings as well as Chad Brown and East Side.

The Latin Kings are mostly just about making money and protecting their money stream.

Chad Brown and East Side have been feuding since the 1970s. From what I've read, the current members don't even know what the feud is about. It's just tradition at this point, but it is ruthless. And they don't just go after rival gang members. They are known to drive through the rival neighborhood and randomly shoot at anyone on the street. A 24 year old white girl (graduate student with absolutely no gang ties) was murdered a couple weeks ago in a drive-by shooting just for being out on the street at 3:30 am in East Side territory.

Chad Brown and East Side are in totally separate (non-adjoining) neighborhoods though, going back to what BBMM said about how Boston gangs are more constantly brushing shoulders with each other in the same neighborhoods. Has Providence (traditionally) had anything like that?

There’s also just dozens of gangs in Boston many of them with ties to different states and regions. Operating on a higher plane with more to lose but more to gain too.

When the Feds raided the Columbia point dawgs in 2016 they recovered 11/12 high end foreign sports cars (abugayis, Lamborghinis) and 1.7M in CASH. That’s just what they found… from one gang. One year. These dudes had operations in Georgia Michigan Maine etc..

The Dominican gangs in Providence are tied to NYC.

A highway, no-man's land (post office, etc.) followed by another highway. There is a clear separation between the two areas. One doesn't "accidentally" stumble from one to the other, and there is no confusion over who owns what.

Dude, if you have enemies in Providence, you can't go ANYWHERE in the city. Heck, you're taking a big risk going anywhere in RI.

These are not gangs fighting over street corners to sell drugs.

This all goes back to them being quite different cities, despite some similarities. I know that you're quite familiar with both, and you know what I mean (even if it can be sometimes hard to articulate).

Edit to add: And I don't think anybody is trying to explain away why Providence is more violent right now, or why Boston has been worse on other years...more so just identifying their different dynamics.

That’s not really much, every other gang in Boston is connected to NYC-they’re down there. They just arrested a a guy East Boston for shootings in Cambridge he had an outstanding warrant in Westchester County NY. If you’re a gang up here and not tied to NYC-you might as well be a youth club lol.
