Yeah makes you wonder. I’ve known quite a few homophobic black men.

Where is the line between blowing up and becoming pop music ? Drake is easily #1 rapper across the board black and white and yeah he's a pop star. When you get to future and lil baby it's a little murkier, but they are within reason to call them pop stars, especially Future. There's an argument to say they aren't too though. What about guys like lil durk and nba youngboy? They are right up there in terms of mainstream popularity if not higher but harder to call them pop music. How can something be underground and known at the same time in this day and age? People in the arent listenin=g to music on tapes in an RC-M90 where it can get heard without leaving the streets. Once an artist ot song takes off online(required for being known) there's no distinction on who is listening to it.

Great points.

Future even said in one of his songs ("2pac") that when he dyed his hair he "went too pop". It was referring to when he was dating Ciara and had a more pop-friendly image. After that, he went back to his roots. But always straddled the fence between hip hop and pop.

Durk and NBA YoungBoy are great examples. They definitely make street music/hip hop, but have a wide appeal with a white fan base and could be considered "pop" even though their music certainly is not pop at all.

Drake is definitely pop, but Kendrick interests me because he really makes music that is sort of anti-pop, yet also pop too (songs with Taylor Swift, winning multiple grammies, etc).

Ultimately in this Internet age, once an artist blows up, people of all demographics are listening to them. That's why rappers in Brooklyn are associated with street crews that are influenced by Chicago (GD's/Vice Lords) and sound like rapper from the UK.

There are rappers in Italy and India who make Drill Music. It's gone way beyond what we knew even 10 years ago when Chief Keef started making music videos in his grandma's basement.

Not only does Lil Baby have an official tiktok (linked above) but his music often goes viral on tiktok clips:

Yeah....most people that listen to songs don't always listen to the lyrics.

Reagan used "Born in the USA" and few people seem to know it's more about a anti vietnam war sentiment. "Go out and kill the yellow man" yet it played over and over again.

Scorpions have Rock you like a hurricane with "The #%@^! is hungry she needs a thrill so give her inches and feed her well".

Here's a 98 year old country song.

these lyrics are all obvious but if you look at many of the songs back in the day they clearly were about sex, we just had other words for it.

If you want to lament something try the fact that some songs back in the day had more of purpose. Civil rights (dancing in the streets), environmentalism (what's going on), womens rights (Respect) of course Vietnam (Who stopped the rain) etc in the 60's and 70's. The 80's it started to kinda lessen. We all fall down by Ultravox (nuclear war), Two tribes (cold war), maybe anti apartide (I ain't gonna play sun city).

The 90's...eh. We had some songs against Iraq war in 2003 and some causes in helping out during Katrina.

Now we have seen some combinations on tour that are odd to say the least. Public enemy and sisters of merch. Yes rap and goth...

didn't work out that well, infact some venues were cancelled. It's really hard these days to argue who listens to what because so much of it isn't really tracked as much as it was before. Back in the day it was local music and music stores. Now there's so many ways to listen to music who knows.
