"The Boston Police Department is putting out a call for cops from other departments to move to the city, according to a letter sent to the state chiefs of police association, with BPD citing “dire” staffing levels.

“I regret that we have to take this step, but the Boston Police Department is in a dire position,” BPD Commissioner Michael Cox wrote in a letter to the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association. “

They'll waive the residency requirement for 6 months

I thought the typical career progression in policing is to start in an urban area to get experience and then move to the suburbs for a better work environment. They are asking cops to go against that customary path?

I've never heard that to be honest. Some BPD cops might retire but are still young so they rather than just stop working they take another job...which might be a cop in suburbia.

I would think they'd have to give them a pretty good pay raise based on 'dire need' and pulling them in from other places. I mean that's how it works in the corporate world lol.

I guess putting veterans who don't live in Boston ahead of residents on the civil service list who do didn't work out.

Unless the pay is dramatically better, why would an officer from a quiet suburban town shift to the BPD?

That's not a customary path.

What does priority to veterans have to do with it ? Have the veterans quit?

Also are they asking people to literally move to the city ?

I think this could be attractive to some people before everyone assumes no one will want to do this. I could see young cops in their 20s being interested.

They've been trying this for a little while now. This speeds up the hiring process significantly since they don't need to be trained. They may get a few from other cities looking for more opportunity to advance or get specialty assignments. I think the residency deal will be a real killer for many. There may be some already living in the city but working for other departments.

Yes, they have to move to the city. They get 6 months and then they need to comply with the residency rule.

Boston was waiving the 1 year city residence requirement for vets who wanted to be a Boston cop or firefighter. So a vet from Arlington or Arkansas would be hired before a resident who couldn't even take the exam before having lived there for a full year.

I'm guessing even waiving the requirement didn't draw enough.
