This topic is city-specific and therefore not appropriate for the General U.S. room. Being moved to the appropriate city room.

I like the Boston accent for what it is... a unique regional twang that adds that much more character to Boston and people from the area. For that reason, I can't dislike it and at times (especially after being away for long) I enjoy hearing that familiar tone.

However, I don't enjoy the sound of it. In fact, I think it sounds pretty bad. There are times when I've cringed at the sound of it. I'm not a fan of accents to begin with (can't STAND just about any version of a Southern Accent- except Virginia which is subtle- OR the Downeast Maine accent which I just think screams "I have no education."), but Boston sounds pretty bad.

As far as "sexiness" goes; no way. Not in my opinion. Since I'm a guy, I'd be looking at it in girls, and there has never been one time where a girl's Boston accent has struck me as attractive. More often than not, it's a turn off. It may just be me, but I don't see it.

Having been raised in Eastern Mass, I do have a few words with a "twinge" (rarely enough for someone to note it and recognize where it's from... usually they say, CT) and it comes out in force when I'm talking with friends who have the accent or (oddly enough) when I'm talking baseball after a drink or two. I've never been told my "twinge" is attractive, but my friends with thicker accents have landed a few ladies due to the accents. My friend and I went to school in Maine, and there were a good number of girls who really dug the Boston accent. I was surprised, but it happened.

I'm moving back to Boston, and I'm terrified my (as yet unborn) kid will pick up the accent. By some kind of miracle, I never got one (for the most part) so hopefully my kid won't either.

My husband is from Chicago (he doesn't have an accent either) and we often discuss which is worse: Boston accent or South-Side Chicago accent. It's still a draw.

The best thing about the Boston accent it is that it lends itself to an effective articulation of swear words...

I never thought it was too bad until "Boston Rob" on Survivor. This guy graduated from a prestigious private HS and had a BS in psychology from BU. He sounded like an uneducated knucklebreaker.

I kept thinking "do we ALL sound like that" ?

Agree, it sounds worse when women have it.

Heh. I grew up very near that part of Chicago and know more than a few people with the traditional South-Side accent and while I don't like to assign values of 'better' or 'worse' to regional accents, I can say, having had extensive personal experience with both of these accents over the entirety of my life, they can both come of as rather harsh to listeners who do not have them, or are not used to them. However, I'm still very partial to the Boston accent when it comes to personal preference, it reminds me of my grandmother (she had it very strong for her entire life and I always found it endearing).
