Hello,
I'm going to be relocating from Texas to Melbourne to attend the Florida Institute of Technology.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to nice streets or areas that aren't too far from the campus?
I have 3 kiddos so someplace that is somewhat family oriented.
Any suggestions or helpful hints will be appreciated!!

That area is generally thought of as the worst area in town, to tell you the truth. they call it the University area.

However, I came from a more urban background and do not think it is bad at all...just very poor and rundown.

They are building brand new luxury condos across from FIT...I'd try to get in on one of those.

If not, try West Melbourne behind the school. I especially like the Whisperwood subdivision off Dairy Road.

Staying West of Babcock is essential - the area around FIT is known as "the hood" - and it is ROUGH - especiallly after dark. I am a social worker - and while I always feel "safe enough" during the day -- I make sure I am in my car - well before dusk.

I am an FIT graduate. Don't make the mistake of moving to Palm Bay, as do many new students. You can rent a single family house, beachside, in Indialantic, Indian Harbor Beach, or Satellite Beach for very little and be at FIT within a 10 to 20 minute drive even during the busier times of day. These beachside neighborhoods are amazingly safe; kids still ride their bikes, skateboard, walk and play in the neighborhood with little supervision. People leave their skateboards, toys, and bikes out, cars unlocked, etc., without much worry. Lots of young families live in my neighborhood (beachside) and there is a palpable sense of community. Additionally, you are near the beach.
