Odds are looking good we'll be relocating to Burlington soon. Job is set, 100k salary, max 425k house budget (4BR). Just looking for suggestions on where to start looking. Number one priority is schools. Number two is safe/low crime. Probably everywhere in and around Burlington fits these criteria, but we're really looking for the absolute best public school available in a nice, friendly suburban (or semi-rural) neighborhood that's convenient to the shopping/entertainment in Burlington. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you want Shelburne. Good schools. Suburban and exurban-lots of big lots. Close to Burlington. South Burlington would be my 2nd choice for schools but it is a much more suburban feeling town. I really like Hinesburg as well-has a more rural feel. Good schools there too (Shelburne, Hinesburg, Charlotte and Williston share a high school). `

Thanks for the reply. Anyone else with further input? This move is looking more and more likely. Thanks!

Check out Jericho. About 30 minutes to Burlington. Chittenden East is a great school district and the town is a very kid friendly place. Close to Smuggler's Notch for skiing, great mountain biking. We lived there for 30 years and just loved it.

I like Williston a lot. It has a very strong community spirit, since the schools, library, etc are at the heart of the village and there are a LOT of families in town. Many outsiders only know it by the big box stores at the I-89 exit but there is a lot more to Williston than that (including a lot of rural land plus the Catamount family center). It's also well positioned geographically. My commute to downtown Burlington is only 6 miles, and it's convenient to Waterbury, Montpelier and the mountains too.

I agree w/momnh. Williston gets a bad rap because most people only think of Wal Mart & Home Depot when Williston is mentioned. The southeast portion of town is gorgeous and rural - Lake Iroquois is a great asset (though technically I think its in Hinesburg) that Williston residents can use for a small yearly fee.

I was born and raised in Burlington. My wife and I live in Colchester/Mallets Bay. Beautiful area but, I am not too sure about Colchester Schools as we have no children. It is an area worth investigating though. 5-10 minutes to Burlington.

Essex Junction and South Burlington might also fit your needs; the former has IBM for its tax base, while the latter has some great neighborhoods around Rt #7 ( Shelburne Road)....

Towns such as Shelburne, Williston, St. George, Charlotte and Hinesburg are "combined" to form the nucleus of students in Champlain Valley Union High School ( CVU); South Burlington students go to South Burlington High School, and..there is the Catholic alternative in Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington...

I don't know if you've found your place or not. However, look at Essex High School, Middle, and then to Elementary. It's nicely broken out so as to not have too many ages together. It is one of the higher rated schools in Vermont outside of going to Rice.

I have good friends in Underhill, VT- They love it.
They went here for HS:
Jericho's Mount Mansfield USD #17 is a public high school in the Mount Mansfield Unified School District #17. It is among the few public high schools in Vermont to receive a distinguished GreatSchools Rating of 10 out of 10.
