Which Northern California cities do you think have the best and most lively downtowns?

The number one choice in the region has to go to San Francisco for the obvious reasons.

However, the number two choice is where it gets more interesting. I think Sacramento definitely has the second best downtown in the Norcal region. It is a good sized downtown, has many revitalization projects going on, history, culture, and a lot of nightlife.

Third for me would be Oakland.

Because of its diverse employer base, transit options, relative compactness, burgeoning arts & dining scene, not to mention growing nightlife and overall vibrancy, I'll say Downtown Oakland. Oh, and Downtown Oakland has seen about 5,000 new condos and apartments come on the market since 2000.

Plus Im an unabashed homer. LOL

Sacramento is Nor Cal's Second City. The others are an extension to the Bay Area, which gives them that advantage but from a city-to-city comparison, Sac wins.

Only by your rules of grouping statistical areas. Then Sacramento warrants such a title merely by default.

lol, that's what I was thinking too.

Haven't voted yet. I suspect a lot of homer votes, since no criteria has been selected.

If we are talking purely skyline looks wise, Oakland takes the cake easily. Diablo range or the Bay/SF/Golden gate in the background depending on the angle. Nice height and collection of buildings. Variety in designs and colors.

However, if we are talking about ground level, then that is a different story. In that case I can see good reasons for either of these 3 largest cities to be the top.
