I guess one thing that would be missing in all the articles and conversation about poverty is a definition of poverty beyond income statistics. Some places, such as California, and Hawai'i, have so many inherent, non-financial benefits to life that I see offsets to strictly defined economics. But then I am a minimalist relatively unconcerned with maintaining a lifestyle founded on owning "stuff". On the other hand, even though "stuff", and even shelter, can be enjoyed minimally and primitively, access to and affordability of healthy food remains critical for even a monk's lifestyle if it is to be lived to its fullest potential. And there again, in considering access to good food, we see California having a pretty good position relative to most other states.

Who cares, it's not our responsibility to help the lazy who do not work hard enough to get out of poverty.

Thanks for the in-depth analysis, Mike. You show a broad-reaching grasp of the issues. The subtleties you identify will no doubt contribute to problem-solving in Sacramento.

Generally people like this don't have much of an income, as generally a good income requires an education, and that is clearly missing from this analysis.

Most folks who get all worked up about the "poor" are not too far from poor themselves, in spirit anyway.
