Shasta Lake is beautiful. I have a college friend whose family lives near Redding (Bella Vista area) and she and her family always go to one of the local lakes in summer when it gets hot. The scenary with the Cascades to the North and East and the Trinity Alps to the West is something to look at. If you are a Christian, Bethel Church is a big draw. I know several people who moved up to Redding to be closer to Bethel, where all the conferences and worship sessions happen. So awesome! I went to Jesus Culture once and its amazing. There is also this restaurant in Redding where you can get great ribs and throw peanut shells on the ground but I cant remember the name of it. If you like hiking and camping, you could move to redding and go to the mountains for weekend trips.

Default Nice place to visit... yada yada...

Redding... sigh...
My older half brother retired there from Southern California about 15 years ago on land he purchased near Whiskeytown Lake nearly 40 years ago. He loves it there... his father who was quite a few years older than our mother used to goldmine there as a young man before the great depression! He also lived on his son's property as an old man and died there. So yup we got some roots up there.

I've been vacationing there on and off since 13, and yeah, it gets really really hot in the summertime, especially when it's over 100 degrees, there's NOTHING like jumping into a cool fresh water lake in my opinion! I grew up, and still live in So. Cal, with chlorine filled pools and the salty ocean waves at the beach are fun, but there's something special about going out in the boat, heating up and jumping in the water then just floating on rafts! Awesome! The best!
There's also Brandy Creek there with a little beach and the creek itself is gorgeous with picnic tables. I love when the deer come down for snacks!

Also, as long as it's not the middle of the afternoon sun, biking on the Sacramento trail is nice... look out for rattlers though!
We've also gone on some fantastic day trips to Burney Falls, Weaverville, Lassen Park... and of course fishing on Shasta Lake!

Anyway, it's a great place to vacation, and good place to retire for a quiet life, and that's exactly what my older brother loves. There's not a lot of culture, theater etc. like in the bigger cities, and yes, there is definately a "trashy" element, but also some really nice people there too.

Okay, better get off memory lane here...
Cheers!

I was born/live in So Cal - which is all called "LA" by Redding Folk

I have extended family who live in Redding, and every summer while growing up, my family would take a month or so and stay at Whiskeytown Lake (Oak Bottom Camp ground) to water ski, camp (RV), and just visit. It's one of my fondest childhood memories.

I'm now 40 and just last summer I took my kids up there for the first time and we loved camping there for a week.

Looks like I will have to cross out Redding from the move to list. I saw a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house with 3 acre property for only $85,000 online. The house was built in 2004 and it's in the Northeast part of Redding in the outskirts of the city. No job, no move for me. I prefer a place that have good job growth and stable economy. It seems many cities in Central Valley get hit hard with recessions.

When you see deals like that... there're usually the kind of problems with the land/structure that you won't want to deal with it, even for 40K. The land price of 3 acres alone is higher, not to mention developed land. There usually some major easement/permit/property boundary issues when price is that low.

Yeah, it's near a creek with hilly topography, which is one of the issues. There are lot of cheap deals thru homepath.com...sometimes there's good deals and sometimes there aren't.
