Calif. lawmaker may propose tripling vehicle registration fees

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGO) -- A controversial plan to raise the cost of registering your car in California could soon be in the works in Sacramento. Even with the Democrats' new supermajority, there are doubts lawmakers will be able to push through another tax.

In what could be the Democrats' first test in the new supermajority powers in the Legislature, a group called Transportation California has asked St. Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, to introduce legislation to triple the vehicle license fee you pay to register your cars.

Well that didn't take long.

Mine wouldn't triple but it would more than double, from 178 to 381.

So we'd be back to the days before Schwarzenegger came into office. I believe his DMV fee cuts helped contribute to California's fiscal problems.

Sorry but I can't stand T&S (tax and spend) idiots.

CA's fiscal problems are caused by out-of-control spending on public employee pensions, people who contribute little or nothing back into the system, and waste.

Fix those problems and you won't have to tax people (people who work and pay into the system) to death.

Despite the fact that pensions do need reform, you know that public employees work for you right? And they provide services. I think that's contributing something.

In any case this proposed tax (which would have to be approved by us) is stupid. The effect that this would have on working class families (and everyone else) would be disastrous.

It was a bad last ditch effort then and it's even a worse idea now.

One of the many reasons my CA car is a beater car, and not the luxury car I had on the east coast. Two can play at this game.

It looks like about another $528 between two cars for me. That's just about my diaper budget for the year. Maybe I should send Ted Lieu the contents.
