I already know people who did. They had a $500k house in Tyler, TX. Property tax was $10K the FIRST YEAR. They looked at their future and moved back to CA.

In CA it would take decades for a $500k house's tax to get that high.

Lol

Calling out a tax system that favors one group over another is now no longer taking responsibility.

I'm a homeowner, prop 13 benefits me directly, I actually have the testicular fortitude to call it like it is.

Do you not like it when the truth is said about your tax break?

Unlike rent control, which applies to certain renters, Prop13 applies to all homeowners.

You can be a home owner and still be a perpetual whiner, grouser and bellyacher.

As to the matter at hand, "No!" The fescue is not necessarily more verdant on the other side of the divide. There are very often trade-offs, i.e. less expensive housing, more expensive taxes. All too many who have "fled" to Texas have found that out to their chagrin and financial detriment. And it's not just Texas. Also, housing prices seem to be on the rise in a number of areas and their taxes follow suit.

But some of us do benefit by moving from the state to another. My house here would cost a minimum of three or four times more in CA than it did here due just in part to the size of my lot and the fact that I have a good lake view. Even with Prop. 13 my taxes would follow suit as here though I'm taxed on 19% of the house's assessed value and that hasn't been adjusted since I bought six years ago.

In any event, better to have moved to someplace I really wanted to be that do nothing but cavil, moan and groan ad infinitum, ad nauseum and do nothing else to change my status. How futile can you get?

$10k property tax on a house assessed $500k seems about right... in Tyler, TX.

Check out the tax histories on these $500ish houses in that city:

6057 Graemont Blvd, Tyler, TX 75703 | Zillow
2014 $9,394 $538,927

4305 Lazy Creek Dr, Tyler, TX 75707 | Zillow
2014 $8,862 $448,591

3661 Woods Blvd, Tyler, TX 75707 | Zillow
2014 $10,190 $513,899

What Californians don't seem to understand is even though Texas has higher property taxes you still come out ahead.

What would a similar house like the the ones in the above post cost here in CA?

Then add on all the other Micky mouse taxes that CA enforces. It's a no-brainer.

You need to enter the school district, utility district, and emergency districts.

Stay confused as I am not interested in your attempts to flame war.

If his friends moved back to CA because they looked at their future solely based on higher property taxes in Texas then I would have to say that was a pretty dumb move.

I wonder what type of house and in what area of CA they could purchase a comparable house as the ones you provided links to.

Then add on all the other Mickey Mouse taxes that CA imposes. It's a no-brainer financially.
