It seems like most threads we've had on CD over the years where people are leaving end up being a rant session. I've always wondered, what's the point? Misery loves company, perhaps.

As someone who truly loves the state even with all its issues its hard to think about moving somewhere else. However, sometimes it just makes more sense. Not because its a terrible place. Rather, somewhere else may simply be a better fit for a certain life stage.

For us, Monterey is the best of what CA has to offer. We've lived here for one of the best decades of our lives while our kids have grown up. Now that they are getting ready for college we're considering living in other states where it may be more affordable and also has good schools. It just might be the best use of our resources. Though we're still torn because we 'know' that no place will compare with Monterey in so many ways. So 'if' we do go it won't be with a big huff but rather fond memories of great times spent living here. Until that time comes, we'll continue to enjoy the opportunities while here. Here are a few recent shots doing so.

And yet, you start a thread ranting about the ranters...hmmm. You could always not read them if they bother you. Kinda sounds like my sister-in-law who is constantly pointing out how much crap is on TV and how evil it is. At which point, I pick up the remote control and explain to her how the channel button works and the special "power" button that enables you to turn it off.

I personally love those threads. Not the ranting, mind you, but rather reading about the array of places that people relocated to, and why they liked them. If the reasons aligned with the things my wife and I liked, we explored them some more. I can't tell you what a valuable resource that was and how instrumental it was in helping us make our own move (it was a result of threads like those and other exploratory measures). I found the threads invaluable, despite the sensitivity of those that can't bear to hear constructive criticism of CA.

That's a really nice post. Beautiful photos, too.

Have thought of leaving California once, years ago, when we were much younger, and felt as if we were living paycheck to paycheck and could buy a house in another state for a fraction of the cost here. (The feeling passed. )

Trust me, I wouldn't have been on CD for over a decade if I 'hadn't' ignored those threads. But I think you missed the point and original question entirely... to simply rant about ranting about ranting. lol

Nope, don't think I missed the point at all. In fact, it's spelled out pretty clearly in the title and introductory comment. Thanks.

The other states problem with Californians is that there's so many of them.

We're still straddling the fence while exploring our options. Though we do have the experience of moving out of state once before as natives. So we've learned through first hand experience that the grass isn't always greener. This time we're looking at it from a more realistic perspective knowing no place will be perfect and no place is quite like home. Honestly, there are some aspects that make CA better then all other options for us. So it will be a trade off of certain things for others if we do make the move.

* Hint, the title is a question. Thanks for your contributions, however.

I think your thread title is both condescending and rather obtuse, for someone who claims to have read C-D for a number of years.

As long as we're passing out hints, here's one for you: This entire site is about other places one might like to live and moving issues. It's beyond stupid to complain that people talk about their moves and to critique the tone in which they do it.
