Think we need a new Coronavirus thread. Rule here is every post must have at least one data point about the virus, public health, etc. You can love Newsolini or hate him, but as the saying goes you must bring data.

So to start...nearly 2/3rds of 65+ year olds in the US have now received at least the first shot. 74% of California COVID deaths have been people 65+. Will be interesting to see how much further deaths decline as more older people in particular get vaccinated.

Thanks for sharing, this is disturbing. I know in the Bay Area they're distributing some vaccines through larger employers, and if not enough employees sign up, the remainder can go to people who aren't eligible otherwise.

Title of this thread is "coronavirus", based on the last series of posts the topic seems to be....I don't know what.

That is because they just opened it up to a new class of people. Of course some can't find appointments in the first few days after opening the eligibility to another 4 million people.

The problem I have with this is they created a large grey area by letting people self certify they have a condition that makes them eligible.

Cases and hospitalizations are reaching new lows in Orange County. There were 82 new cases recorded on March 15, a daily number not seen since last April. There are 49 Covid patients in the ICU, down from a high of 544 just two months ago. All of the over-65s that I know personally have had at least one vaccine shot, if they wanted one. This is all so encouraging.

I've been struggling with this. Trying to book appointments for 3 family members who qualify (1 emergency responder, 1 transportation worker, 1 with health issues). Was able to get 1 in through her healthcare provider (Scripps). The other 2 are SOL because none of the pharmacies have anything, My Turn is directing people to the worthless Albertsons website, and the county page is a mix of no appointments and invalid server requests. Nothing on the Rite Aid website if I go directly to it (no links through My Turn, etc.). Meanwhile, we've had no trouble getting my S.O.'s family in SF and San Joaquin County scheduled for their shots.

Statewide ICU is down to 850, was just under 5,000 during the Jan. peak.

That said, worst case rates are still in ag communities in the Central Valley. One of the tragedies is that instead of tailoring policy to the needs of the migrants who live and work there, there were just blanket statewide policies. Don't think SF or Marin outdoor dining bans helped these people who were hit the hardest.

Also at a 4.0 case rate, OC is 1/10th of a point away from beginning to qualify for "Orange" status.
