I moved out 4 years ago for my husband (he lived in Seattle)

What an utter mistake - we are now going to take a financial loss to move back - I've been upset since I left

My parents have lived in Calif for 45 years, and they are very conservative - I've never heard such things as leaving california because it's liberal!

Yes I think some people's behavior is shameful. Those greedy business owners who hocked their houses and ran up credit card debt to start their companies, worked 80 hour weeks to survive and eventually employ hundreds then became so selfish once they start rolling in the dough. They fuss about paying 10.3% tax rates while having their kids indoctrinated in liberal nonsense at school. Finally they pack up and leave. Good riddance. Oh well perhaps someplace else is better for them.

California truly is a place where the inmates have taken over.

CA suffers from the same tax imbalance that hurts the Northeast. When a state pays so much to D.C. and gets so little back, it places a high burden on the state government to raise taxes. If states such as CA, NY, NJ, CT, IL, MA unite to fight for their fair share of funding it may help. The red states will point to their low state taxes as a reason for their growth but fail to recognize that they are able to keep taxes low thanks to our federal tax dollars.

As for California being so Democratic, well, it used to be Republican until the religious right took over the party, as did I. Maybe when you dump the religious right and show more concern for things like the environment and science, maybe we will return to your party. It is your dumping of the moderates for religious extremists that is making your party fare so badly in elections of late, with more losses assured in Congress and possibly the presidency.
Add me to the list of pissed off Republlicans here in 2008 as well.

It seems I see a lot of folks leaving or threatening to leave California. What are the good reasons to move to California?

* You want to be a star
* You love crowds
* You want to work in TV/film production and this is where the jobs are
* You have some unrealistic vision in your head that moving to California will fix all your problems
* You're independently wealthy, can afford to live anywhere, like mild weather, and can insulate yourself from the reasons people are leaving California
* You can't stand weather above 80F or below 40F and are willing to pay 40% of your gross income every month on a small apartment to avoid weather

Planning to leave, but not because I hate it here. I love it here. It's just too expensive for me to live in the type of house and neighborhood I'd like to and live the lifestyle I enjoy. If I could afford a 600 or 700k house, I'd stay.

I'm moving to Bentonville Arkansas. I just discovered I'll save about $1000 a year on auto insurance. I never lived outside of CA. $165,000 new 4 BR homes on large lots is one good reason.
