Anyone else having registration renewal problems... or is it just my lucky day???

Mailed off my check and Renewal Registration Form a week before it was due last November on my 7 year old car.

A couple of weeks later my new validated registration card and 2009 Plate Sticker arrive via US Mail... life is good

Last week a notice of Delinquent Renewal and a $77 added "Late" penalty arrives by mail.

I call DMV and explain they have made a mistake because, not only is my registration NOT LATE... I have already received my 2009 Registration Card, 2009 Plate Sticker and I have my Canceled Check as proof :

Today, I receive another letter stating legal ease about operating a vehicle with expired registration and notice that delinquent fees due can be collected from my California Income Tax Return through the Franchise Tax Board

I'm starting to get a little more than mad wasting my time, under threats of monetary penalties, for another DMV caused problem... third similar issue over 5 years.

Ordinarily, I would ignore something like this from a private company... but, how can I ignore the DMV?

Is it possible they are still trying to collect on this from a prior year?

Have you gone in person to DMV with the documents you listed? Sometimes that is the only way to get the problem taken care of.

Thats the best advise you can get, I've had a few problems and going in person is the only way to take care of it.

Use the internet to renew from now on. it's instant and you have electronic record too. Good luck unraveling the DMV.

Maybe contact your local Assembly member for help with DMV if you don't get anywhere with a face to face.

I stopped by my local Senator's office this morning... she has been to my business several times and I have spoken with her at various functions in the past... so I thought I would go to her... seems she can't do anything because I don't live in her district. That's something I will have to remember.

I did contact MY Assembly Woman who's office is two cities over from where I work and live and her staff was very helpful

You won't believe the advice DMV gave me... I was told to send a new check, include the penalty and THEN apply for a overpayment refund

Why would I pay twice and wait for the State to send me an IOU for a refund?

You are likely get a check for the over payment minus the penalty.
I would walk in and bring all relevant paperwork. You could try a AAA club if the DMV is too crowded.

I had a car that I no longer used. Was thinking of junking it. So I let the CA license expire. Got notices from the state demanding money for tag renewals. I ignored them and let the car sit. Then I got a notice saying they were going to file a lien against me if I did not pay up. All the while I have no current tags and am not driving the car. But they are not going to let the matter drop. Was forced to pay up. Apparently if you are not going to drive a car you must, I repeat must, file a certificate of non use. Otherwise you will pay.

Very true... it wasn't always this way but you are now required pay for NON-OP status or continue pay yearly registration.

In my case I paid everything on time AND received my 2009 tag and reg...

I know it's some kind of DMV glitch... but why should I have to "Prove" I did everything right or else???

Just venting here and thanks for putting up with me

I do all my renewals at Auto Club. If you're a member, just go there and do it. It's quick, easy and painless.
