Doomsday safe-haven offered at bunker under California's Mojave Desert

BARSTOW, Calif. (AP) — A company with a doomsday plan is taking money for what it promises will be a comfortable, nuke-proof bunker under the Mojave Desert, with an atrium, gym and jail, and sloppy joes and pearl potatoes on the menu.

[more in the article]
Doomsday safe-haven offered at bunker under California's Mojave Desert - latimes.com (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-us-doomsday-bunkers,0,750214.story - broken link)

A few of the more amusing tidbits:

In Barstow, $50,000 will get a bunk in a four-person room. Vicino is still taking reservations: $5,000 for adults and $2,500 for kids. Pets are free.

Only $200,000 for a family of four! And your poodle, cat and iguana stay free! What a bargain!

Steve Kramer, a 55-year-old respiratory therapist from San Pedro, said he paid $12,500 to reserve spots for him and his family. He's stocking up on dried food and teaching his 12-year-old son to ride a dirt bike in case they have to go off-road to get to the desert bunker.

Biking from San Pedro to... somewhere in the Mojave? Hmmmm...

It does seem to me that once the nukes have flown or the quake has hit, actually getting to the bunker is going to be rather problematic, to say the least.

And the website is shameless... (and unintentionally hilarious):

Yes, this was in my local paper. Ya know ... for $50,000 I expect a hell of a lot more than slpopy joes, potatoes, and dried food.

Who can put a price on spending up to a year in an underground facility with 131 strangers and their pets?

131 smelly, farty strangers and their smelly pets.

Someone restrain me, I'm about to sign the check.

You might want to reconsider that. I'm pretty farty.

If there's any disaster about to strike California, it's the rise in the sea level. I figure my parents' place will be bayfront property in about 5,000 years.

I saw this article, too... Unless the shelter is in your own back yard, you've just wasted your money! How are you supposed to get there? Even if there's warning (like terrorists would announce that they're launching a nuclear attack in 24 hours!), then everyone hits the road at the same time, massive traffic jams ensue, and you still can't get to your bunker in time!

Honestly, I should go into this business. I bet I'd make a fortune. How about a portable survival suit? It can be like what the astronauts wear!

The best part of this? These shelters haven't even been built yet! You may fork over $200,000 only to find nothing at all when you get out there. It's so wrong to prey on people's fear this way.

It makes about as much sense to me as people who pay $$$$ to be frozen upon their death.
