San Gabriel mountains would make a pretty good blast shield from any nuclear strike in the LA Basin.
Just wall off the Cajon Pass and annex our part of the county to either AZ or NV.
The kooks in the bunker will then be welcomed by the stone-sour faces of the CalNevAri Confederations welcoming committee.

An isolated or terrorist blast, sure.

But a full-scale strategic nuclear exchange - happily much less likely since the late 1980s - would surely see Edwards and China Lake and Irwin and Twentynine Palms and Goldstone whacked.

Lots of lovely fallout to wade through en route to Bunkerland!

LOL! A desert retreat from the world. Sounds suspiciously like Charles Manson's desert vision of a refuge from helter-skelter.

Be afraid! Be very afraid!

Exactly. Barstow is conveniently situated in the middle of a target-rich environment.

This makes no sense. there will be no warning when the "big one" happens so this doesn't really work.

What if they lose your reservation, like hotels do?

Or L.Ron Hubbard's own doomsday bunker in the desert, for that matter...

Well, if it's an airburst(more than likely), then we'll definitely have to steer clear of the immediate blast zones and keep a check on the Geiger counters for "safe zone" checks.
Earthquake otoh, with all the trash currently misplaced up here from distant metro areas, booby traps and community militias will be the essentials in dealing with the resulting brigands.
