How expensive is St. John's to live in, when factoring in the average salary there, compared to other Canadian cities it's size and larger? And how is the economy there? If it's struggling now, is it expected to pick up again within the next five to ten years?
I'm also wondering what the crime rate is like there compared to other cities it's size and bigger.
And besides cost, what are the other disadvantages of its iscolated location? For instance, is there less to do there compared to similar sized places because less companies and businesses want to go there due to isolation, cost or other factors (like weather?)
Thanks!
I find the site Numbeo very reliable in terms of cost of living comparison. It's up-to-dated with people submitting local prices all over the world. You can plug in any Canadian city to compare with St. John's.

Judging by the Weather Channel St. John's has been hit and will be hit by some really big Nor'easter storms.
My research shows the city to be in a spectacular setting and Water Street on a weekend a place to remember.
I'll report back in July. I bought my plane tickets to get up to St John's for three nights after a few nights in Montreal. First trip back to Canada since 2006, really looking forward to it.

While some might think it's located in a spectacular setting, I'd have to disagree. The best I can come up with is that it's a poor imitation of a tiny San Francisco. And concerning Water Street on a weekend, it isn't really a place to remember.
